  A NEW YEAR IN MEXICO
A bonding moment
Brynn experiences a bonding moment with an orphan child

We can't explain why, but every year near Christmas time we get so many volunteers that want to go to Baja California with us. Unfortunately we filled up very early and had to turn away some of you; for which we are very sorry and hope that you sign up for the next trip! On this last trip (which went during the week between Christmas and New Year's Day) we had 48 individuals working with us at the various orphanages.

This last work project we were able to lay lots of cinder block on the new infant orphan building at Door of Faith Orphanage, paint several buildings at two orphanages, remodel a bathroom that had been damaged by termites, and pour a cement sidewalk which benefits Buena Vida Orphanage and the community. Additionally we were able to donate dozens of boxes of food, cash, and other needed supplies to several orphanages in Baja California.

Even the children were great volunteers!

Besides working, we did alot of other fun activities. We attended services with the orphans at their local non-denominational church. Volunteers played in the sand, rode horses on the beach, swam and surfed in freezing cold water, and enjoyed the sun. On New Year's Eve day, the volunteers challenged the young men of Door of Faith Orphanage to a soccer game, which the orphans barely won (okay, they really creamed us the first game). New Year's Eve we played games around the campfire, set off fireworks, and whacked a piñata senseless. It was a GREAT time!

To you volunteers who worked so hard, and to you donors who provide needed cash and supplies, THANK YOU! We certainly hope to see you on a future trip with us!

  MISS YOUR FAMILY?
Megan and the kids
Megan with some of her best friends

Megan Swalberg was one of our caregiver volunteers in Haiti. Here she shares some of her memories of working with the children at the orphanage.

Four years ago I had the most beautiful experience of my life; I was able to live in Haiti for three months with 38 amazing children through A Child's Hope Foundation! The children will never know the full impact they had on my life, a big part of who I am today is because of them. They taught me how to appreciate the smallest things, but most importantly, how to love.

My favorite daily routine was tucking them into bed! I loved getting multiple hugs and lots of kisses. It's tough getting 38 children to brush their teeth and get their pajamas on, but somehow every night it happened! I was amazed how well I got to know each one individually in such a short period of time. They just wanted to be loved and because of that it was so easy to make a connection and adore them. There is something about these children that really pulled me in.

I hate to admit it but I got homesick occassionally. After dinner one night, I started to cry. Besides missing my family, my heart also ached for the people of Haiti. It seemed like no matter what I did to help, it just wasn't enough. Three of the children came up to me and in Haitian Creole asked, "Miss Megan, why are you sad? Do you miss your family?" They wrapped their little arms around me and held me so tight. These children who didn't even have families were comforting ME! I'll never forget the way that touched me. I wasn't just there for them, they were also there for me. I believe each one of these kids has a purpose in life. They want to love just as much as they need to be loved in return.

More children adopted - Rebecca & Robens

In December two more children were adopted from the Haiti adoption orphanage. Rebecca and Robens are birth siblings and fortunately that bond will be preserved for years to come as they were adopted by the same family. Congratulations to the children and their new parents!
