  SINGING AS SHE GOES
Sofia
Sofia Leonie Knaap

Sofia Leonie Knapp was born Florence Innocent on January 17, 2004 in Delmas, Haiti. In December of 2005, Sofia was adopted by her new family. Since that time she has become at treasured member of her adopted family. A little while ago her mother, Jody, sent us an update on Sofia and how she is doing.

Sofia Leonie Knaap is 4 ½ years old and continues to progress socially and emotionally. She greets almost everyone she encounters, always with a smile. She is very friendly to anyone she meets. She adjusts well to new situations and environments better each week. Sofia awakes daily with a smile and a hug, and although she has a strong stubborn streak, she is seldom angry for more than a few minutes (usually when told "no", surprise!). Her teachers at the preschool have been very pleased with her adjustment and progress as well, her recent "report card" indicated much growth in her behavior and educational skills!

We can't say enough about her appetite and her choice of food groups. Sofia still chooses vegetables for her lunch and dinner each day, she eats a lot of rice, beans, pasta, fruits and some dairy. She loves shrimp, and does alright with meats, but still prefers chicken or just veggies and pasta. So far a very balanced diet, hence a good part of the reason she has never been on an antibiotic or seen the doctor for sick visits.

Sofia's Family
Sofia With Three of Her Older Siblings

She loves to glue, paint, play in the sand, and digging in "whatever" is a good time for her. At school if they are on the playground, Sofia is digging with buckets pretending to cook or build, anything having to do with digging! Inside she likes dress-up play, dolls and kitchen play. At home she wants to help in the kitchen, cooking or in the sink, cleaning or just playing in the water with dishes. Books and being read to are still among her top favorites, we have a not-so-small library of her books that we add to far too often! Dislikes are any kind of sandwich (nothing cold please). She doesn't like to wear pants ever, though occassionally it happens. And still she isn't into outdoor play equipment, trikes or scooters very much.

The integration into our family has truly been the most amazing part of this whole process. Sofia appeared comfortable and trusting from the very beginning. It has only increased by the day. She is very loving and affectionate, but still maintains her independence at home and at school. She will go upstairs alone and play in her playroom by herself for sometimes an hour at a time, mostly she is in the same room as us, but she does enjoy some alone playtime once in a while. She recently acquired some pet hermit crabs, after a weekend at the beach, so now along with our two dogs (her best playmates) she spends time talking to, feeding, watering and bathing, Hermie, Henrietta and Sampson. Always singing as she goes, did I say ALWAYS?!

Sofia is loved and adored by all our family. She spends a good deal of time with three of the four older siblings, 19, 25, 26. They come here to our house weekly and she will often go to theirs. Without a doubt, adopting Sofia was the best decision, along with having our own homegrown children, we have EVER made! Thank you for making this happen for all of us.

Another adoption finalized

We have wonderful adoption news this week. Roseta, one of our beautiful Haitian children was able to travel home with her new family this week. She arrived at the orphanage in Haiti malnourished and with a serious fever, but today she is healthy, loved, and has a bright future ahead of her!

Additionally, we expect two more children to be coming home to their new families by the end of next week!
